MATT SMITH
VP OF TRANSPORTATION & INFRASTRUCTURE
Matt Smith has spent 28 years building things and, more importantly, building people. As Vice President at Stansell Electric Company, he leads the Transportation and Infrastructure teams across Nashville and Knoxville, overseeing Estimating and Preconstruction, Construction Operations, and Fleet. His focus is on culture, strategy, and living out Stansell's purpose: grow our people, serve our customers, and build our community.
Before joining Stansell in 2011, Matt owned and operated a general contracting and electrical contracting firm for 13 years, working primarily in the water and wastewater markets across Middle Tennessee. After being referred by a friend already at the company, he came on as a Project Manager and worked his way through Senior Project Manager and Team Leader of Construction Operations before stepping into the Vice President role in 2018. In that time, he has led some of the largest and most complex projects in the company's history, including Phases 1 and 2 of the I-24 Smart Corridor.
What drives Matt is not the finished product. It is the people behind it. He believes that while building things is exciting it is also temporary, but helping someone grow into who they want to be is truly lasting. Serving his team is not something he does alongside the work; it is the work. That commitment runs deep for Matt personally. His great uncle was a journeyman electrician at Stansell years ago, and today one of his own children works here too. That kind of legacy is something he does not take lightly.
Outside of work, Matt credits his wife Heather as his greatest earthly blessing and spends as much time as possible with her and their three children, traveling, and getting into the mountains of East Tennessee. In the fall, you will find them at Neyland Stadium for every home game. Go Vols!
Matt holds a B.A. in Psychology from the University of Tennessee and is a Qualifying Agent (BC and CE) and ATSSA TCS certified. He serves on the TDOT/TRBA Workzone Safety Committee, is a member of TRBA, and previously served on the Board of Directors for TUCA of Middle Tennessee. He is also an active member of First Baptist Church in Hendersonville.
